Speedfigs + Blog for #Southwell 5th Jan
There is a horse called Imjin River who has topped my speedfigs with an unusually decent figure (for the grade) of 102. When I delved deeper I noticed that the horse was carrying 8lb less today, which I found a bit odd since he’d only been beaten about 1L at Lingfield over 5f last week. It transpires that the jockey put up 3lb over-weight and that the horse had to run from 3lb out of the handicap, so in theory, it would have won the race had the jockey done the weight. Each 1lb in weight is worth at least 2 lengths in a handicap over 5f. And just for added measure, the handicapper has dropped him 2lb so he’s a full 8lb better off than on his last run!
Today’s race conditions mean that the Imjin River can run off his correct mark and the jockey WILL do the correct weight, fortunately some 11lb higher than last week (which allows for a few mince pies). He was staying on well last week and Southwell’s 5f will present more of a stamina test than Lingfield. His all-important course form can’t be faulted either, with a record of 3 runs which have produced a win, and second and a third place.
I’m also very keen on Searchlight in the 2.40 who is bred to go well on the surface and has a decent figure today.
